Useful facts for wine-drinking pleasure

It is certainly possible to just pour out the wine and drink it. But you can also treat a wine the way it deserves: with lots of care and a loving eye for the detail. It will make a difference you can taste: the wine will develop its full character, and the aroma and taste experience will be all the more intense. Let yourself be inspired by the recommendations of the sommeliers. Below is a compilation of tips on getting the most out of wine.

Getting your wine to the right temperature

Getting your wine to the right temperature

The French term "chambrer", meaning "bringing to room temperature", derives from the word "chambre", meaning "room". But do not let yourself be misled by this term. Although a wine does need a little time to develop the right drinking temperature "in the room", our modern room temperatures are too warm for most wines: they lose their bouquet and go flat. The best way to check is with a wine thermometer: white wine should be drunk at 9–12°C, red wine at 16–18°C, and Sekt and champagne at 8–10°C. It is ideal if you can open the wine an hour before serving it.

Be careful when uncorking

The invention of the cork is ascribed to the monk Dom Pérignon, who knew his way around a cellar and a wine press. Uncorking requires a little care. First cut off the upper part of the capsule surrounding the cork 1 cm below the rim so that the metal cannot come into contact with the wine. This could negatively affect the bouquet. Then clean the bottle neck with a cloth. First try a little sip to see if there is any fault with the wine. This way you ensure that your guests enjoy perfect drinking pleasure.

Decanting for a full aroma

There are two reasons for decanting. The first is to separate the wine from the deposits which form at the bottom of the bottle with older wines. The other reason is that wine can develop its full aroma in a decanter or jug. It is important to decant the wine gently, preferably using an intelligently designed decanting funnel.

Pouring correctly

Do it like the sommeliers: hold the glass at a slight angle. Depending on the glass size, fill the bowl about a quarter, and no more than a third. Sekt and champagne glasses are only filled half-way. Another recommendation from the experts: serve the wine at a temperature slightly cooler than the one optimal for drinking, as the wine will continue to warm up in the glass.

Even drinking is an acquired skill

Mere drinking is something we do from birth. But drinking wine is a little different: a little practice is required in order to properly enjoy wine. First enjoy the sight of it, and let the colour take its effect on you. Gently swirl the wine in the glass to give it oxygen and thus let it develop if full aroma spectrum. Then smell it. Young wines exude floral or fruity aromas, while mature wines have many layers of scent compositions. Now take your first sip and let it run gently over your tongue. A good wine shows its full depth once more in its aftertaste.
